Henna is a plant-based dye derived from the henna tree, also called the Egyptian privet and mignonette tree. The leaves of the henna plant have a natural coloring dye that is used for temporary body art, coloring hair, dyeing skin, fingernails as well as material such as leather, wool, and silk.
Henna has been used in Ancient Egypt as well as other areas such as North America, South Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and some parts of Africa. Nowadays, the plant is more commonly found in the warmer parts of Australia, Pakistan, and India.
henna leaves are dried into a dusty form and then made into a mashed paste. Using this way, the lawsone molecule slowly travels from the henna mixture into the outer layer of your skin, making a stain on your design.
Since it is hard to create body art from leaves, henna is widely produced in powder form, made by drying and crushing the leaves. The dry powder is then mashed with liquids, including water, coffee, lemon juice, and other components.
The henna mixture must be left for a short period of time before putting it on your skin. Depending on the leaves of the henna, using essential oil such as Lavender, or tea tree will also enhance the stain of the dye. Natural henna paste is not shelf-stable, meaning that it will expire and shouldn’t be left on a shelf for over one week.
Temporary Henna Tattoo
For body tattoos, the leaves of the henna plant are dried, crushed into a fine powder, and formed into a thick paste using a variety of techniques. This paste is then applied to the skin, staining the top layer of the skin only. In its normal state, it will dye the skin an orange or brown color. Although it looks dark green (or dark brown depending on the henna) when put on, this green paste will flake off showing an orange stain. The stain becomes a reddish-brown color after 1-3 days of application. The palms and the soles of the feet stain the darkest because the skin is the thickest in these areas & has the most keratin. The farther away from hands and feet the henna is applied, the lesser the color. The face area usually colors the lightest.
Used for a Hair Dye
It is a natural semi-permanent hair dye that is widely used around the world for its many hair advantages. Starting from the basics, it is a fresh and natural hair dye, free from value-added chemicals.
Because it is a natural substitute for traditional-based dye, it is also used to dye eyebrows, mustaches, and beards. As the growing trend of natural products, henna is more popular than ever in the west. It not just makes your hair stronger but also treats dull and damaged hair because of its earthly advantages.
Conventional-based dye, there’s not much of the coloring you can get with henna. Also, the application procedure is longer compared to the body art.
