The Most Common Types of Lash Extensions
There are three most common types of lash extensions: synthetic, silk and mink. Size availability varies from 6mm to 17mm. Once picked, the lash extensions are adhered one at a time using a formulated, semi-permanent glue that will not irritate the eyelid nor damage the natural eyelashes.
Synthetic Lashes
Synthetic lashes are the ones usually chosen by clients. They’re a type of false eyelashes, which are made from plastic man-made locks. The lashes seem to be a lot thicker and bolder in comparison to the natural human eyelash and are meant to be discarded after one time use.
Some people don’t find them as ‘soft’ or ‘natural’ looking than silk or mink eyelash extensions, and while they last a long time, the most dense type (we use a maximum of 0.20 mm in width) don’t have quite as good staying power as the silk and most certainly not the mink.
Silk Lashes
These are the light-weight type of extensions, and are thinner and more flexible than the synthetic type. Because they are softer and more fragile, they tend to hold on slightly longer than the synthetic extensions .
They can be made to look very natural or extremely glam, but sometimes almost as dense/thick as the synthetic lashes. Because they are lighter weight, they are often a much viable option for your lashes if your natural ones are weak or thin. They definitely last longer than synthetic lashes too.
Mink Lashes
Mink Lashes are made from actual mink fur, which allows for a light, soft, bushy and eventually, more natural look, matching to a similar quality of natural human eyelashes. Due to the high quality of materials and light weight of the lashes, mink eyelashes are able to be reused many times.
Faux-mink lashes are becoming very widely used because they are so light and sparse. They are also more glossy in texture than the silk lashes, giving the lashes a glossy look. Because they are so light, they don’t tend to fall off or twist, even after many weeks of wear. Because they are so thin, the surface-area-ratio between your own lash and the extension is closer to 1:1 (with synthetic it can be 1:2 or even higher) so they last for a longer while.
Each Type of Lash Extension Fiber has Benefits and Disadvantages.
- Mink fur feels incredibly fluffy and has a texture that is very similar to natural human lashes. Mink is the most expensive type of eyelash extension, depending on how many fibers you want, the brand you choose, and the professional who applies them.
- Faux mink. For clients who prefer 100% cruelty free lashes but really love the look and feel of mink, there are faux mink lash fibers available. These man-made fibers look and feel very similar to real mink, but won’t require too much money and won’t be cruel to an innocent critter.
- Silk lash extensions. Silk lash extensions are a mid-weight lash fiber that is usually well-loved by users. A salon will likely try to convince you that these types of lash fibers are not a good fit because they aren’t as expensive as mink or faux mink.
- Synthetic fibers. The least expensive lash fibers available are synthetic fibers. These fibers are notoriously weighty and can leave you feeling bushy and irritated. They will also look the least natural of all your lash fiber choices, but also are the cheapest.
