Threading is a method of hair removal specially for shaping eyebrows and eliminating upper lip hair. Unlike tweezing or any other removal method, where single strands are pulled out one at a time, threading can eliminate short rows of hair. Benefits for brow threading, as opposed to eyebrow waxing, include that it provides more specific control in shaping eyebrows, and that it is more delicate on the skin.
There are a few different ways for threading. These include the hand method, mouth method and neck method. Each method has advantages and disadvantages; however, the mouth holding method is the quickest and most precise.
Threading allows for a more definite and precise shape and can create better gravity for eyebrows. It is also used as a method of removing extra hair on the entire face and upper lip area. Threading is not a good technique for removing hair on arms or legs, as the hair in those areas is usually quite coarse, rough and there is too much to eliminate.
Eyebrow Threading
The threading process is quite simple and generally involves a single piece of cotton thread string. After wiping the eyebrow area clean with alcohol swab, the string is twisted and pulled along areas of extra hair acting like a mini-lasso, removing the hair directly from the root without the use of any chemicals or unnecessary pulling on the delicate skin.
One of the most usual technique of threading is with the long strand of cotton thread — held in one end of the mouth. The string is twisted in order to efficiently roll over the skin to individually pluck the roots of extra hair. While there are different threading methods, this is most famous technique.
Other processes include either the use of a chain instead of the mouth to hold the string, or the butterfly method, which has the knotted thread being twisted and pulled through two fingers on each hand like a scissor. Clients are usually in a reclining chair and asked to hold the skin taut around the brow, which makes the area more accessible and often eliminates the discomfort, too.

Threading or Waxing?
Waxing is best for super bushy eyebrows and for clients that find brow shaping painful. Threading is good for people with sensitive skin and good for anyone that has recently had skin peels or is on medicine that would restrict them from having waxing. The perfect thing about threading is that anyone can have his or her face threaded. What I mean by anyone is that anyone even those who have very sensitive skin. This hair removal method is as natural as it gets. This is why threading should be your first preference when it comes down to hair removal for your face.
Why Threading Could Be Preferred Over Waxing
- Threading only eliminates the hair but waxing thins the epidermal layer of the bare skin.
- Threading allows tugging the hair gently while waxing opens the pores because of sharp pulling.
- Threading does not injure the skin but warm wax can increase its sensitivity.
- Skin will sag over time because of the pulling effect and cell damage wax can cause.
- No allergic reaction when using a thread to remove unwanted hair
- Threading will never burn the skin.
- Threading also removes dead skin while removing unwanted hair
- Dermatologist recommend threading for clients who have sensitive skin or using medication that waxing is not recommend for.
- Waxing does not have the same precision for brows where threading gives eyebrows a cleaner, smoother and an overall natural look.
