Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese process that works on their theory of, ‘yin’ and ‘yang’ and according to traditional Chinese medical theory, acupuncture points are located on meridians or pathways (which they relate with pathways in human bodies), through which vital energy runs. This energy is known as “qi” or “chi.”
In the process, an acupuncturist examines his patient and assesses his body conditions, after calculating the locations of points where the needles must be inserted; they insert one or more thin, sterile needles for therapy.
How this process starts is that the patient has to lay down on a bed with their back, front or side upward, depending upon the direction of needles to be inserted. The needles used for Acupuncture are single-use, disposable and sterilized. When the needles are inserted, patient can sense a slightly stinging or tingling feeling.
When the needle is inserted into your body, you can feel a dull ache at the base of the needle that withers away with time. Although the process is considered relatively painless. But there are times when the needles are heated or stimulated with electricity after insertion.
The time required for these needles to stay inserted is about 5 to 30 minutes.
Number of Treatments
Some people may need multiple treatments and some may just need one or two for their best. For instance, people with some chronic condition will need one or two treatments a week over several months. If it’s an acute problem than, it’ll take 8 to 12 sessions
Benefits of Acupuncture
There are many benefits of Acupuncture, which can be listed like:
Safe
It’s everything goes well in an acupuncture process, then there’s no safer process than this.
No Side Effects
A very big advantage of this procedure is that, it not only solves many of your health diseases but also it has no or only a few side effects.
Effective
It’s a really effective medical term in itself but it can also be combined with other treatments to get better results and treat other ailments.
Pain Relief
It’s an efficient method for pain relief and treats many pains like headaches, back pains, and others. And the process itself is sufficiently painless.
Medications
By taking help from this terminology, you may have to consider any other medications and hence it’s best suited for people who can’t go for other medications.
Conventional Health Care
The NCCIH advise people not to use acupuncture instead of seeing a conventional health care provider.
Risks Involved in Acupuncture
All therapies have risks as well as benefits. So, some risk factors associated to this process are:
Bleeding Disorder
This process is not at all suitable for those patients who has a bleeding disorder or takes blood thinners. It can become a health hazard for them.
Bruising
When needles are inserted, soreness, bleeding and bruising can occur on those points.
Unsterilized Needles
Patients can get infected by the use of unsterilized needles. And so, rather than treating your health care problems, it can become a problem in itself.
Damage an Internal Organ
Although this can be a very rare case in acupuncturists’ process but it’s a possibility that the needle brakes and damages an internal organ or causes internal bleeding.
Collapsed Lungs
In case of a very rare incident, when the needles are inserted into chest or upper back, there is a risk of Collapsed lung. And one must be very cautious while dealing with that area because of the sensitivity we are dealing with.
Acupuncture can be an extremely effective and helpful process and helps deal with many illnesses but even this process has its benefits and risks attached to it. So, one must be responsible enough to care for all the after-effects that are going to be a part of this procedure.
